Oeschinensee Proposal — Samuel & Ana’s Marriage Proposal in Switzerland

Oeschinensee, also known as Lake Oeschinen, is one of the most spectacular places in Switzerland for a marriage proposal. The turquoise alpine lake, surrounding Bernese Alps and mountain trails create a dramatic setting for a private proposal and an engagement photoshoot.

I photographed Samuel and Ana’s proposal at Oeschinensee as a surprise mountain experience rather than a simple lakeside session. We hiked away from the busiest areas and reached a higher viewpoint overlooking the lake, where Samuel planned to ask the question.

Samuel & Ana’s Oeschinensee Proposal

Samuel and Ana chose a more adventurous approach to their proposal.

Instead of staying close to the main lake, we planned a hike towards a higher viewpoint with a panoramic view over Oeschinensee and the surrounding mountains. This gave us more privacy and also created a natural story for the photography: the hike, the anticipation, the proposal and the celebration afterwards.

The plan had to remain completely secret.

I went ahead on the trail and positioned myself discreetly, so that I could photograph the proposal without making Ana suspicious. From a distance, I looked like another photographer enjoying the mountain scenery.

When Samuel reached the agreed viewpoint, he stopped, turned towards Ana and got down on one knee.

The reaction was completely genuine — surprise, emotion and finally a very happy “yes”.

That moment is what I love about proposal photography in Switzerland. The landscape is spectacular, but the photographs are ultimately about the people and what is happening between them.

A Secret Proposal Above Lake Oeschinen

One of the advantages of choosing a mountain trail for a proposal at Oeschinensee is the possibility of moving away from the busiest areas.

Samuel and Ana continued higher along the trail, where the landscape opened up and the turquoise lake became part of the panoramic view below them. The additional hike required more effort than a short lakeside walk, but it gave us a completely different atmosphere for the proposal.

For a surprise proposal, I usually plan the photography so that the couple does not need to think about the camera. My role is to stay discreet, anticipate the important moment and then guide the couple naturally once the proposal is over.

This is particularly important when photographing a proposal rather than a standard portrait session. The proposal itself cannot be repeated.

From the Proposal to an Engagement Photoshoot

After Ana said yes, the atmosphere changed completely.

The secret was over, so we could slow down and enjoy the location together. We continued hiking and photographed the two of them in different parts of the landscape, using the lake, alpine meadows, cliffs and mountain views as natural backgrounds.

This is one of the reasons I recommend allowing some additional time after the proposal itself.

The proposal may take only a few minutes, but the photographs afterwards tell the rest of the story. Couples can relax, celebrate, walk together and enjoy the location without the pressure of keeping the surprise secret.

For an active couple, an Oeschinensee engagement photoshoot can therefore become much more than a few photographs beside the lake. The entire hike can become part of the experience.
