Ultimate Seealpsee Travel Guide: Parking, Hiking, Boat Rentals & Local Dining
Planning a trip to Seealpsee in the Appenzell Alps? Whether you are visiting for a scenic day trip or preparing for a secret marriage proposal, this guide covers all the practical details you need to know about transportation, parking, optimal photography times, hiking routes, boat rentals, and local restaurants. If you want to see how a real proposal looks here, check out my recent Summer Engagement Photoshoot at Seealpsee story.
1. How to Get to Seealpsee by Train & Car (Parking Info)
The journey to Seealpsee begins at Wasserauen, the main valley station in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.
- By Train: Take the Appenzeller Bahnen (S-Bahn) directly to Wasserauen Station. From Appenzell town, the train ride takes just 15 minutes.
- By Car & Parking: Driving to Wasserauen is very convenient. There is a huge paid parking area located right next to the train station and the Ebenalp cable car. Parking costs approximately 5 CHF per day. During peak tourist days, additional overflow parking fields are opened to accommodate visitors. You can navigate directly to the main parking area here: Wasserauen Main Parking on Google Maps.
2. The Hike from Wasserauen to Seealpsee
Since Seealpsee is not directly accessible by car, you will need to walk up from Wasserauen. There are two main options:
- Direct Route (Steep Asphalt Road): Takes about 45–60 minutes. It is steep but paved and easy to navigate. Ideal if you are carrying photoshoot outfits in your backpack!
- Scenic Forest Trail (via Chobel): Takes about 1.5 hours. A gentler, shaded trail through the forest with beautiful views, returning via a loop.

3. Best Time for Photography at Seealpsee
If you are planning an engagement photoshoot, surprise proposal, or simply want to capture the lake at its most breathtaking moment, timing is key:
- Golden Photography Hours: 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
- Why Early Morning? Arriving around 9–10 AM offers soft, flattering natural light as the sun rises over the Alpstein peaks. Moreover, the water is usually calm and glass-like, creating perfect mountain reflections, and you will enjoy the tranquil atmosphere before the main daytime crowds arrive.

4. Rowboat Rentals on Seealpsee (Prices & Info)
Renting a traditional wooden rowboat is one of the highlight experiences at Seealpsee and an iconic setting for engagement photography.
- Price: Approx. 16 CHF per hour per boat / 7 CHF for 30 min
- Payment: Cash only (CHF) at the boat rental hut near Berggasthaus Forelle.
- Availability: Seasonally available from late spring to autumn during calm weather conditions.

5. Restaurants & Dining by the Lake
After your hike or photoshoot, there are two fantastic traditional Swiss guesthouses right on the lakeshore:
- Berggasthaus Forelle: Famous for serving fresh trout caught directly from Seealpsee, alongside traditional regional Appenzeller dishes and a spacious outdoor terrace overlooking the water.
- Gasthaus Seealpsee: Offers cozy alpine hospitality, local cheeses, hearty Swiss meals, and overnight accommodations if you want to catch the early morning sunrise.
Average Prices at Lakeshore Restaurants:
- Coffee: \~5.20 CHF
- Beer: From 6.00 CHF
